SANTA CRUZ, Spain, July 2 (UPI) -- Police in Spain say they arrested a man they accuse of operating a marijuana farm on land owned by the Catholic Church.

Investigators in Santa Cruz, on the island of Tenerife, said the 27-year-old man, identified by the initials R.C.H., was hired to cultivate land that is part of the Diocese of Tenerife in April 2012 and secretly used some of it to grow several marijuana plants, The Local.es reported Tuesday.

Police said the man tried to shield the plants from public view using a wooden frame covered in plastic sheets.

The man was watering the plants at the time of his arrest Friday, police said.
