June 29, 2013 at 5:07 PM

ROME, June 29 (UPI) -- Beagles rescued from a pharmaceutical lab are beginning new lives with adoptive families, officials at an Italian university said.

The 21 dogs have been through rehabilitation in the department of veterinary science at the University of Pisa, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The university announced Friday that all have been placed in new homes.

A pharmaceutical company was using the beagles for testing. They were transferred to the university under a ministry of health program.
