MOUNT OLIVE, N.J., June 25 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey said a man caught driving a Kia from a dealership just after midnight told officers he just taking a "test drive."

Mount Olive Police Officer Michael Russell said Sgt. Mark Carlstrom was patrolling near the Kia dealership in Mount Olive when he spotted a 2014 Kia drive off the lot around 12:09 a.m. Saturday, The (Newark, N.J.) Star Ledger reported Tuesday.

Carlstrom pulled the vehicle over and the driver, David Fletcher, 44, of Hackettstown, told him he had driven his own car to the dealership to look at the new cars, Russell said.

Russell said Fletcher told Carlstrom he spotted a vehicle with the keys in the ignition and "he then decided to take the vehicle for a test drive."

Fletcher was arrested on charges of burglary and unlawful taking of means of conveyance.

The suspect was released on his own recognizance and is due in court at a later date, Russell said.
