NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) -- The New York Office of Emergency Management said it spiked the scenting agent added to natural gas with cinnamon to prevent 911 calls during work.

The office said Sunday it was masking the smell of mercaptan, an odor added to natural gas to allow residents to detect leaks, with cinnamon along a pipeline in Harlem to prevent an influx of 911 calls during work Sunday morning.

"There's no danger. It's a masking agent used to cover the scent of mercaptan," OEM spokesman Christopher Miller said.

"Due to scheduled repairs of a natural gas pipeline at W134 St/Hudson River, residents may smell a spice odor in the area," the office posted to its Facebook and Twitter pages Thursday.

Miller said there will be no health risks from the sweet-smelling gas releases during the work.

"This will be performed in an open environment and there are no health risks," Miller said.
