The office said Sunday it was masking the smell of mercaptan, an odor added to natural gas to allow residents to detect leaks, with cinnamon along a pipeline in Harlem to prevent an influx of 911 calls during work Sunday morning. Advertisement "There's no danger. It's a masking agent used to cover the scent of mercaptan," OEM spokesman Christopher Miller said. "Due to scheduled repairs of a natural gas pipeline at W134 St/Hudson River, residents may smell a spice odor in the area," the office posted to its Facebook and Twitter pages Thursday. Miller said there will be no health risks from the sweet-smelling gas releases during the work. "This will be performed in an open environment and there are no health risks," Miller said.
