June 14, 2013 at 1:47 PM

TOKAMACHI, Japan, June 14 (UPI) -- Authorities in Japan said an 80-year-old man was found alive more than two days after his pickup truck went off the road and fell from a farm cliff.

Police in Tokamachi, Niigata prefecture, said Yoshiro Yanagi, 80, told his family he was going to his rice field shortly after 3 p.m. Monday and his family members called police when he hadn't been heard from by Wednesday night, The Mainichi Shimbun reported Friday.

Yanagi was found around 8 a.m. Thursday, lying next to his pickup truck about 164 feet below the road. The man, who was conscious, told police his truck had gone off the road and fell down the farm cliff. He said he was able to crawl out of the truck, but was unable to move far due to his broken ribs causing pain in his lungs and a condition in his legs that requires him to walk with a cane.

Yanagi said he had not had anything to eat or drink since the crash. Police said he told them he was "relieved" when officers arrived.
