Entenmann's Bakery, based in Pennsylvania, said it was offering "Free Donuts for a Year" and other prizes to visitors to its Facebook page who enter a drawing by the end of the day June 30.

The company said it started its celebration May 1, with a pledge to donate $1 to The Salvation Army for every new "like" on its Facebook page through June 15.

"We're proud to continue our partnership with The Salvation Army for the third straight year," said Entenmann's marketing director Maureen Sticco. "The holiday would not exist if it was not for The Salvation Army and Entenmann's is excited to be a doughnut manufacturer associated with the holiday and the organization."

The Salvation Army started National Doughnut Day in the 1930s to honor "doughnut lassies," women who provided doughnuts and other care package items to men fighting on the front lines of World War I.
