INDIANAPOLIS, June 5 (UPI) -- An Indiana woman said she made her children carry signs identifying them as thieves at a roadside as a punishment for stealing a gift card from her.

Natashia Scott of Indianapolis said she received a $50 gift card for being an outstanding employee at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and she soon discovered her daughter, Unique Caruthers, 11, and step-son, Xacherey Scott, 14, had spent the card on ice cream, The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

Scott said her daughter had stolen the gift card from her dresser drawer.

The children were punished by being made to carry signs for about an hour Tuesday at the side of a busy road.

"I am a thief. I stole from my mother and my family," Unique's sign said.

"I am a accomplice to a thief! I help spend stolen money from my stepmom. Don't trust me!" Xacherey's sign read.

Scott said she hopes the punishment will put the children on the right path.

"If it takes for them to get humiliated, that's what I'm going to do," she said.
