DENVER, June 2 (UPI) -- Denver Zoo officials announced its first birth in 20 years of a Przewalski's foal, an endangered, wild horse native to Asia.

Mother Yisun gave birth to the foal Friday, the zoo said in a news release. It's the first offspring for father Bataar, The Denver Post reported Sunday.

"The Przewalski's horse is considered the only remaining truly wild horse in the world," the zoo said in the release.

Przewalski's horses are also known as Mongolian wild horses or Asiatic wild horses and were extinct in their natural habitats in Europe and Asia before a reintroduction program began in the 1990s, the zoo said.

There are more than 300 of the horses in the wild, the Post reported.

Zookeepers said they have yet to determine the foal's gender.
