New York's Citi Bike program suffers first theft

NEW YORK, May 27 (UPI) -- Police in New York said the city's bike sharing program got off to a rocky start when someone stole one of the bicycles.

Investigators said someone stole one of the Citi Bikes, part of a program launched Monday, as it was being delivered Sunday to a rack in the Kips Bay neighborhood, the New York Post reported Monday.

A Citi Bike spokesman said he did not yet have information on the theft and couldn't comment.

The program suffered further hiccups Monday when a few hundred of the 11,000 pre-ordered membership key cards were not delivered. Dani Simons, the program's director of marketing, said the U.S. Postal Service was to blame for the trouble.

"Out of 11,000 [keys], a few hundred got lost," Simons said.
