NEW YORK, May 23 (UPI) -- A New York 12-year-old won $10,000 worth of actual pirate treasure in a scavenger hunt organized to promote a Discovery Times Square exhibit.
Sebastian Bekkaoui was one of 700 participants to receive the first clue Friday, and he and his mother, Sheila Doherty, 45, followed the clues to city locations where people in pirate garb handed out fresh clues. Bekkaoui and Doherty were the first to arrive at the end of the hunt Wednesday at Trinity Church, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.
Discovery Times Square, which organized the scavenger hunt to promote its new "Shipwreck!" exhibit, said Bekkaoui has the option of keeping $10,000 worth of pirate treasure -- including three coins and three bottles from the SS Republic, which sank in 1865 -- or collecting $2,500 cash.
Bekkaoui said he and his mother have not yet decided which prize to take.
