MANCELONA, Mich., May 22 (UPI) -- The principal of a Michigan middle school said he put the facility in lockdown when he spotted a black bear on school grounds.

Chad Culver, principal of Mancelona Middle School, said he was speaking to a teacher around 9 a.m. Monday when he looked out a window and noticed the black bear about 20 feet away from the building, The Traverse City (Mich.) Record-Eagle reported Wednesday.

Culver said he watched the bear walk around the building and out of sight before he decided to declare a lockdown. He said classes were not disrupted, but students were not allowed to leave the building.

The principal said the lockdown lasted for about 10 minutes and students saw the bear when it wandered past the large windows of the school's library.

The bear was last seen crossing U.S. 131 west of town.
