DETROIT, May 21 (UPI) -- A group known as the Detroit Mower Gang is inviting volunteers to join them for a 24-hour event to mow grass at the city's abandoned playgrounds.

Detroit Mower Gang chief mower Tom Nardone, 43, said the first Motown Mowdown by Husqvarna will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at O'Shea Playground and will pause only for participants to camp out for the night in a Detroit park, organizers said in a Facebook posting.

The Detroit Mower Gang said about 20 of its members mow abandoned parks and playgrounds on alternating Wednesday nights. The members bring their own equipment.

"It's cathartic, you know," Nardone told the Detroit Free Press. "It's fun because you're out there with your friends, so it's a little like driving go-karts around and it's a little meditative and the impact is really amazing as well.

"What 20 people with lawn mowers and weed whackers and blowers can do to a park that hasn't been touched in two years is amazing. You can have a totally usable park in two hours."
