Los Angeles top city for dog attacks on mail carriers

May 16, 2013 at 2:06 PM

WASHINGTON, May 16 (UPI) -- Los Angeles leads all American cities in injuries to postal service employees by dog bite, the U.S. Postal Service announced Thursday.

In anticipation of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, May 19-25, the Postal Service said 5,879 of its mail carriers experienced dog bites in 2012, and released a list of cities ranked by number of attacks.

Los Angeles was ranked first with 69, followed by San Antonio, Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore and Sacramento.

"If our letter carrier deems your loose dog to be a threat, you'll be asked to pick up your mail at the post office until it's safe to deliver," said Ken Snavely, acting postmaster of Los Angeles.
