Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe AUSTIN, Texas, May 9 (UPI) -- Proponents of a bill passed by the Texas state House said it is aimed at preventing lawsuits from teachers saying "Merry Christmas" in public schools. The bill, approved Wednesday by the House, seeks to prevent any legal ramifications of saying "Merry Christmas" in the state's public schools and would allow traditional religious symbols, such as nativity scenes, so long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are represented, the San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday. Advertisement State Rep. Dwayne Bohac. R-Houston, said the bill is designed to prevent "ridiculous" lawsuits. "Teachers are fearful of calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree," he said. The bill's approval was hailed by several Santa Claus impersonators, who rang sleigh bells in the House gallery.
