Ariz. student gets $16,000 water bill

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., May 9 (UPI) -- Officials in an Arizona city said they are working with a student whose water bill for two billing periods totaled $16,000.

The resident of the University Heights neighborhood of Flagstaff received a pair of bills for $11,000 and $5,000, accusing the student of using 1,412,210 gallons of water, enough to have left the water running for more than a year, The Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, reported Thursday.

Flagstaff Mayor Jerry Nabours said officials are working with the student and his landlord on a deal.

"The city feels bad about it, the tenant feels bad about it and the landlord feels bad about it," Nabours said.

He said officials discovered the water was leaking into a fissure under the home, with no outward evidence of the leak. He said the city is offering a $2,500 discount on the bill and is trying to determine whether the landlord's insurance company will cover the rest.
