FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla., May 3 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said a man was charged with battery after allegedly hitting his girlfriend and then asking officers to arrest him.

Fort Walton Beach police said they responded to a report of a disturbance at a home April 21 and a woman at the residence told them her boyfriend, Bruce Blackshear, 52, had struck her when he arrived home from work and she asked if he was going to kiss their child, the Northwest Florida Daily News reported Friday.

Officers said there were red marks on the woman's thigh.

Blackshear said his girlfriend was mad because he was planning to file a protection order against her and get full custody of their child. He said he did not know how the woman got the marks on her legs.

Police said Blackshear was argumentative, refused to write a statement and repeatedly asked to be arrested.

Blackshear was charged with battery, second offense, and is due to appear in court June 11.
