Baby gorilla makes outdoor debut at Cincinnati Zoo

CINCINNATI, April 30 (UPI) -- A baby gorilla rejected by her mother made her outdoor debut to the public at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

Ron Evans, primate team leader at the zoo, said baby gorilla Gladys has been introduced to the Gorilla World outdoor yard and will be on public display in the pen from 12:45 p.m. until 2 p.m. most afternoons, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Monday.

Gladys was rejected by her mother after she was born Jan. 29 at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas. She was relocated Feb. 22 to Cincinnati, where she is being cared for by human surrogates until a female gorilla can act as a surrogate mother.

Evans said the surrogates are working on the "gorillification" of Gladys, by encouraging her to climb trees and explore caves.
