Benefit overpayment leads to 1 cent repayments

PARIS, April 27 (UPI) -- A French woman who mistakenly received nearly 3,000 euros in unemployment compensation has been granted a generous repayment schedule -- 1 cent per month.

The local employment center told the woman she'd been overpaid by 2,648 euros ($3,449). When the woman said she couldn't afford to pay back the government, she received a letter in the mail stating she was only responsible for paying 12 cents per year "until the extinction of your debt."

At that rate, the woman would pay back the debt in about 22,000 years, TheLocal.fr said Friday.
