April 19, 2013 at 2:30 PM

PERM, Russia, April 19 (UPI) -- Russian army officials said they accepted a 23-year-old woman who signed a contract to serve in the military so she could be with her fiance.

Anatoly Mochalkin, acting chief enlistment officer of the Perm Territory, said Yulia Pankova elected to sign a military enlistment contract after her fiance decided to continue to serve with the 76th Guards Air Assault Division in the city of Pskov, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

"She was found fit for military service," Mochalkin said. "A military unit has hired her as a nurse and anesthesiologist at the Air Force's airmobile hospital."

The enlistment made headlines in Russia because of the woman's reason for joining, the officer said.

Mochalkin said Pankova is being given a rank and will begin her service after completing her university exams.
