Leone Coppola of the Vecchia Ottocento pizzeria in Gavirate, in the northern part of the country, won first prize Wednesday at the Parma Food Fair's first-ever World Pizza Championship, ANSA reported Thursday.
Coppola said he learned the art of pizza-making in Naples, commonly referred to as the home of the pizza.
Laura Meyer and Mara Mancosu, both of Milan, came in second and third, respectively.
The event was attended by about 20,000 people, organizers said.
