Stillwater police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office said the father of a 14-year-old boy who attended the class called his brother, Sheriff Bill Hutton, to report the 76-year-old volunteer instructor had accidentally discharged his weapon April 11 before the class at Salem Lutheran Church School in Stillwater, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer-Press reported Thursday.
The police report said the man, whose name was not released, was "very apologetic ... for the foolish mistake."
"You gentlemen can't imagine the embarrassment I feel towards myself for what took place," the man told police.
Mike Hammer, education programs coordinator for the DNR's enforcement division, said the incident is under investigation.
"It's an unfortunate incident," Hammer said. "Of course we take firearm safety very seriously and this is, unfortunately, an example of what can happen if you don't practice good, safe firearm handling all the time."
