Frog stows away from Florida to Canada

REGINA, Saskatchewan, April 18 (UPI) -- A Canadian wildlife rehabilitator said a Cuban tree frog apparently hitched a ride from Florida to Saskatchewan in a load of lumber or greenery.

Jim Elliott, a Regina wildlife rehabilitator, said the frog was discovered at the Rona Home & Garden center in Regina and workers believe it stowed away in a shipment from Florida, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.

"I've determined it's a Cuban tree frog," Elliott said. "I'm feeding it live crickets."

Elliott said the frogs are considered an invasive species in Florida, so it is unlikely that officials in the state would want it returned home.

Elliott said he is awaiting word from Environment Canada on whether the frog is a protected species in the country. He said he is currently keeping it safe in a Tupperware container.
