SWINDON, England, April 16 (UPI) -- Officials in a British city said contractors who painted yellow lines down the center of a 4-foot-wide alley must have forgotten "how big cars actually are."

Residents of Swindon, England, said they were shocked to see the lines had been painted down the center of a 60-foot-long alleyway, even though the 4-foot width of the alley makes it impossible for cars to use, The Mirror reported Tuesday.

"When the bushes are overgrown you can hardly even walk down there so you wouldn't ever think to drive," said Emma Stratford, 22. "It's all rather silly, we laughed at it but it has definitely been a waste of money."

A Swindon Borough Council representative said the lines were painted by contractors as part of an initiative to crack down on illegal parking in alleys.

"It seems that our contractors forgot just how big cars actually are when they painted this one," the representative said. "We will be taking it up with them."
