MADRID, April 11 (UPI) -- A German couple who spent 14 months living in a Spanish hotel free by posing as potential buyers have been ordered to pay their nearly $173,800 bill.

The couple, who spent more than a year at the four-star hotel in Pals on the Costa Brava without paying for their room or any amenities, faced two years in prison and were ordered to pay their nearly $173,800 bill, plus interest, thinkSpain reported Thursday.

The court heard the couple claimed to be potential buyers of the business and were staying at the hotel for research purposes.

However, the pair were evicted after officials discovered they had no intention of buying the hotel.

Spanish law spares the couple from jail due to their sentence being no more than two years unless they are found to have committed any other crimes.
