Rossana Lucas, who was initially suspended for five days for answering her cellphone while driving a Broward County Public Schools bus that was not carrying children at the time, received an outpouring of support from the public when she said the call came from her son, a U.S. Marine serving in Iraq, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.
Superintendent Robert Runcie put the suspension on hold pending an investigation but the investigation found Lucas was not telling the truth about the call. Audio from security cameras installed on the bus recorded Lucas discussing a private side business with a party who was not her son.
Lucas admitted to making up the story Tuesday at the school district headquarters and voluntarily accepted a 10-day suspension.
