SALEM, Mass., April 9 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man built a replica of a torn-down church from more than 20,000 Lego blocks to help "ease the pain" of his fellow former parishioners.

John Walker, 38, of Salem, who revealed his creation Monday at St. James Church to other former members of St. Joseph Church, which was torn down in January to make way for housing construction, said he started the project in October and spent approximately $2,000 on Lego blocks, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

"I didn't do it for the accolades," Walker said. "I did it to ease the pain of the people who had to see the church come down."

Walker said he still has to finish the church's roof and other details. He said his is aiming to have the project completed by October.

"I just want St. Joseph to be remembered," Walker said. "Our whole family went there."

Walker said he is hoping Salem's other four Catholic churches will agree to display his model once it is completed.
