Senator's office calls police on caller

SALT LAKE CITY, April 3 (UPI) -- A Salt Lake City woman said she was called by U.S. Capitol Police after calling the local office U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, to ask about whether he'd be in town.

Elise Lazar said she called the Salt Lake City office of Hatch, R-Utah, March 25 to ask if he would be in town during spring break and whether any town hall meetings had been scheduled, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

Lazar said she explained she and some friends wanted to discuss issues with Hatch but was reluctant to reveal the issues because she didn't want Hatch to refuse to meet with her.

She told the newspaper she wanted to voice opposition to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

Lazar said the receptionist told her Hatch would be too busy to meet with her while in town.

The woman said she received a phone call the following day from the U.S. Capitol Police in Washington. She said they told her a complaint had been filed by Hatch's office and they felt she might be a suspicious person.

Hatch spokeswoman Heather Barney said the receptionist was concerned due to Lazar's lack of clarity on the purpose of her call and kept pushing on the "comings and goings of Senator Hatch."
