County offers overnight stays in new jail

LINCOLN, Neb., April 2 (UPI) -- Officials in a Nebraska county are offering overnight stays in a newly constructed jail for $30 donations.

Lancaster County officials said donors will be allowed to spend the night Thursday, Friday or Saturday to help the county ensure everything in the facility is functioning properly before it is put to its intended use this summer, KFOR-AM, Lincoln, Neb., reported Tuesday.

The donations will be given to Operation Santa Claus and the Child Advocacy Center, officials said.

Signs have Scottish drivers seeing double

ABERDEEN, Scotland, April 2 (UPI) -- A Scottish road management company said a sign's placement 20 feet from an identical sign wasn't a mistake.

Bear Scotland said the road sign on A90 southbound in Aberdeen, which gives the distances to various locations, was put up 20 feet from an identical sign ahead of the older sign being replaced, The Daily Mirror, Britain, reported Tuesday.

"A new sign has been put up to accommodate new signage for a U-turn ban and junction warning signs," a Bear Scotland spokeswoman said. "The existing sign that was there originally will be moved in the next fortnight."

"The whole idea is to have two signs so that no information is lost for the motorists while the move takes place," she said. "It is normal to put the new sign up before the old one is taken down."

Police investigate pretzel dip fight

TROY, Mich., April 2 (UPI) -- Michigan prosecutors said they were trying to determine whether charges will be filed in a fight that began with a dispute about pretzel dip in a shopping mall.

Troy police said they were called to the Auntie Anne's pretzel stand in Oakland Mall for an incident that began when two women, ages 19 and 22, returned to the food court shortly after buying two pretzels to complain that they had been given the wrong dip, WWJ-TV, Detroit, reported Tuesday.

The women argued with employees who told them they would have to pay to replace the dip because they had already started eating it and a worker allegedly threw dip at the customers, striking them and a nearby security guard.

The women then tried to climb over the counter and fought with workers, police said. One of the women suffered a minor injury.

Mothers fight at zoo's Easter egg hunt

SEATTLE, April 2 (UPI) -- Seattle police said officers were called to the Woodland Park Zoo when an Easter egg hunt led to a fight between two mothers.

Police spokesman Jonah Spangenthal-Lee said witnesses told officers the women began arguing about 1 p.m. Sunday when one of the mothers allegedly shoved the other's child to allow her own child to get to some of the brightly colored eggs, Seattlepi.com reported Tuesday.

"The shoving sparked a confrontation between the first woman [the supposed shover] and the second child's mother, who began fighting and had to be separated three or four times," Spangenthal-Lee said. "The brawl left the first woman with a bloody nose."

Police said the children, most of who were 4-6 years old, witnessed the violence and were submitted to foul language.

"The second woman was gone when police arrived at the zoo and when officers tried talking to the ... first woman to see if she had any info that could crack the case, she said she wasn't interested in pursuing charges against her attacker," Spangenthal-Lee said.
