Advertisement The female calf was born with the extra appendage on its back March 9 on the Brenham-area ranch of Charles and Karen Harmel, the Houston Chronicle reported. "I've never seen this before," said Dr. Lee Panko, who removed the leg Tuesday. "I think the calf developed that way from a genetic defect." The extra leg, similar to the calf's front legs, was attached just behind the shoulder but was not connected to the spine, KWTX-TV, Waco, reported. The young bovine was sent home with the Harmels later the same day. Charles Harmel, who has been raising cattle for about 40 years, said it was a first for him as well. The calf was born in the middle of the night and at first he and his son didn't notice anything amiss. Advertisement "We went back down to check it about 30 minutes later and my son said, 'What's that on the back of that calf?'" Hamel said. Truck carrying half billion bees overturns MADRAS, Ore., March 31 (UPI) -- A truck carrying a half billion bees overturned in Oregon, prompting an army of local bee handlers to come buzzing to the rescue. The driver of the truck said he swerved to avoid hitting an animal on Highway 97 north of Madras, Ore., Thursday. When the truck rolled on its side, the bees were stuck, KGW-TV, Portland, Ore., said Friday. Wearing protective gear, apprentice bee handlers from the Central Oregon Beekeepers Association inspected each of the 200 hives, which were not seriously damaged. The hives were taken to a nearby farm until another truck arrived to take them on their way. Neighbor's note spurs 'tacky' lawn display DARTMOUTH, Nova Scotia, March 31 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman who got a note from a neighbor calling her seasonal decorations "tacky" said she will "go worse" with her Easter decorations. Lori Perron of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, said she got an anonymous note from a neighbor that said "do not demoralize our subdivision and street with yet again, your very tacky decorations. Halloween and Christmas was enough. Perhaps you should consider that this area is a step above you." Advertisement At first, Perron said she was hurt by the note. Then, the more she thought about it, she decided to go even bigger with this year's Easter display. "First I thought, 'No, I won't decorate,'" she told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., Saturday. "And then I thought. 'Yeah, I will, and I'll go worse, I will be tacky.'" The result? A slew of bunnies on the lawn, dozens of eggs, and other decorations hanging from the porch. Perron said she'd like the neighbor who wrote the note to come forward and meet her family in person. She even invited them to dinner. "Happy Easter to whoever you are," she said. Denver's Big Blue Bear vandalized DENVER, March 31 (UPI) -- Vandals added some color to Denver's iconic Big Blue Bear statue, pouring green paint down its back, police said. The 40-foot statue stands outside the Denver Convention Center. The added paint makes it look like the bear is wearing a green cape, The Denver Post reported. Police said they were looking for whoever was responsible for the Saturday night incident.
