Baby brown bear visits California home

MONROVIA, Calif., March 29 (UPI) -- A California man said having a baby brown bear enter his home and scrounge for food was "really scary and amusing at the same time."

Justin Lee, 25, said he locked himself and his dog in an upstairs bathroom Wednesday when the baby bear used a ripped-off dog door panel to open a sliding glass door and get into the home in Monrovia, northeast of Los Angeles, ABC News reported Friday.

"We are used to seeing bears outside of our home. They will come to our garden and back yard a lot, it is common in our city, and I've gotten used to seeing them these past two years. But when I saw them walk into our house, it was really scary and amusing at the same time," Lee said.

Police arrived and discovered the baby bear had helped himself to Chinese food and dragged a bag of dog food outside to share with another baby bear, which had remained outside the home. Monrovia Police Department Lt. Nels Ortlund said the animals were "staring at the officers, but were not aggressive."

Officers fired a non-lethal bean bag round into the air to frighten the bears back into the wilderness.

"Bears are a regular occurrence in the foothills of Monrovia," Ortlund said. "It is a good reminder for people to place trash and pet food in secured containers, and as warmer weather approaches, to be watchful as they are outside more and as they leave doors and windows open."

Lee said nothing was broken inside his home.
