Baby born at California roadside

LANCASTER, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- A California father said his son was born at the side of the road when the labor came "too fast" for him and his wife to make it to the hospital.

Javier Garcia said he was driving his wife Gladys to the hospital in Lancaster and they pulled to the side of the road when it became apparent they would not make it in time for the birth, KNBC-TV, Los Angeles, reported Wednesday.

"He just came out," Javier Garcia said. "It was too fast."

Garcia delivered his son, Noah, with guidance from an emergency dispatcher.

"The baby has a nice cry," Capt. Lester Fuzell of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. "Dad did fine. These situations do occur and you never really know when Mother Nature decides that new bundle of joy is going to come."

The mother and baby were said to be doing well at Antelope Valley Hospital, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported.

Freeway proposal leads to four arrests

WEST COVINA, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- Police in Southern California arrested four men after freeway traffic was blocked by more than 200 bikers for a marriage proposal.

The California Highway Patrol said Hector Martinez, 24, Mike John David Gutierrez, 38, Giovanni Mendez, 19, and Rudy Cadena, 24, were arrested Thursday in connection with the January incident on the 10 Freeway in West Covina, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Police said 200 to 250 motorcyclists blocked traffic on the highway before Martinez "performed a burn out for several seconds" and "then proposed to his passenger."

"Several of the motorcyclists on scene applauded, videotaped and photographed the incident, which was posted on YouTube," the police report said.

"After a thorough investigation, four of the main individuals involved in this incident were identified," the highway patrol said.

All four men were charged with misdemeanor public nuisance and unlawful assembly. Martinez was also charged with exhibition of speed.

$1.11 in pennies removed from dog stomach

NEW YORK, March 13 (UPI) -- A New York man said veterinarians conducted life-saving surgery to remove 111 pennies from his dog's stomach.

Tim Kelleher said Jack, his Jack Russell terrier, ingested the $1.11 in pennies while trying to eat bagel remains from his desk Friday, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

"He climbed on my desk to get at the bag with the bagel and knocked the change all over the floor. While he was licking up the crumbs, he swallowed the pennies," Kelleher said.

He said veterinarians at BluePearl Veterinary Partners were worried the zinc in the coins could pose a lethal threat to the 13-year-old dog's liver and kidneys, so the pennies were removed in a 2-hour operation.

"If Jack would not have had the pennies removed the consequences would have been fatal," Dr. Amy Zalcman said.

Kelleher said Jack is recovering nicely from the procedure.

"He's doing great," Kelleher said Tuesday. "He's driving me crazy again."

Girl, 12, brought $20,000 to school

TAYLOR, Mich., March 13 (UPI) -- Police in Michigan said a 12-year-old girl who was found to have $20,000 cash in her backpack apparently received the money from another child.

Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said the Sixth Grade Academy student, whose name was not released, was found to have $20,000 cash in her backpack Monday when officials discovered she had been distributing cash to other students, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.

"The 12-year-old apparently got the money from another child who lives across the street from her the night before," Sclabassi said.

Sclabassi said school administrators "brought in the student, secured the backpack and retrieved the money she had given away. This is a real first for me."

The chief said the girl's neighbors have claimed the cash and police are investigating.
