Wrong-way basket costs team key game

YUKON, Okla., March 8 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma high school basketball team was 2.9 seconds away from a state tournament semifinals berth when a wrong-way basket cost them the game.

Hugo led Millwood 37-36 Thursday night, had possession of the ball and only needed to run out the clock to win the Class 3A quarterfinal game. But that's when things went oh so wrong for the Buffaloes.

Hugo guard Trey Johnson got the inbounds but instead of heading toward the Millwood basket, he inexplicably zipped to his own hoop and executed a layup, The Oklahoman reported.

"When I saw the kid going that way, I was like, 'No, he's not. No, he's not ... Oh, yes he is,'" Millwood assistant coach David Samilton said. "I couldn't believe it."

The ball went in, the buzzer went off and for a moment the boisterous crowd went quiet. But then it sunk in -- the Falcons had a 38-27 victory and Millwood's went wild.
