EDINBURGH, Scotland, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A road in Scotland was closed for hours Friday after thousands of gallons of glue spilled from a truck.

The truck dropped its container after jackknifing at about 5:30 a.m. in front of a gas station on the A76 between Dumfries and Kilmarnock, The Scotsman reported. The crash occurred in Sanquhar, about 40 miles south of Glasgow.

Anne Williamson, who operates the station with her husband, said road workers had been using grit to try to cover the glue.

"It's a bit messy. They are trying to recover the lorry, but there are thousands of liters of liquid glue near the main road and on the forecourt," she said. "At one point, there were 20 people out there trying to sort the mess out. We've been told we have to clean up the mess ourselves."

Lawrie Roberts, who lives in the neighborhood, said after being wakened by the noise he saw a 6-inch-high mass of glue moving toward his house.

"It came right up to the front doorstep and the car was covered in it," he said. "I don't know how we'll get it cleaned."

The road remained closed for 12 hours. Drivers were diverted into a long detour in the rural area.
