Colo. Senate pres.: 'Please douse doobies'

DENVER, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The entire Senate chamber in the Colorado Capitol smelled strongly of marijuana Wednesday, lawmakers said.

John Morse, the Senate president, asked during the session, "Do you smell marijuana in here, or is it just me?" thereby cracking up his fellow lawmakers, KMGH-TV reported in Denver.

The TV station did not report whether the legislators' giggling was due to a collective contact high.

"If the sergeants would please douse all the doobies in the area," Morse's voice was heard asking on a recording of the morning's session.

World's largest baseball card unveiled

LAKELAND, Fla., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Trading card company Topps unveiled the world's largest baseball card, measuring 60 feet by 90 feet, in a Florida city.

Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder, who is pictured on the card, attended the unveiling ceremony Tuesday in Lakeland, where the Tigers have held their spring training for the past 77 seasons, WFLA-TV, Tampa, Fla., reported Wednesday.

"You know obviously Detroit has a good relationship here cause you know their spring training's been here forever, and also the fans love Detroit, so it's a mutual love I think," Fielder said.

Texas teacher on leave for lasso incident

ROWLETT, Texas, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A Texas middle school teacher has been placed on leave after a lasso lesson gone wrong left a seventh-grader with rope marks around his neck.

Garland Independent School District spokesman Chris Moore said the teacher, whose name was not released, was teaching a lesson on cowboys at Schrade Middle School in Rowlett when he asked for student volunteers to run around while he attempted to lasso them, WFFA-TV, Dallas/Fort Worth, reported Wednesday.

Moore said a 13-year-old student ended up with bruises on his neck when the lasso landed on him incorrectly.

"This is not something that we feel was malicious, it was not intent," Moore said. "Extremely unfortunate, and extremely poor judgment."

Moore said the Garland Independent School District placed the teacher on leave as a precaution.

The Rowlett Police Department is investigating the incident for possible criminal charges.

Thai couples take aim at kissing record

BANGKOK, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Nine couples in Thailand had their lips locked Wednesday in an attempt to break the world record for longest continuous kiss.

The couples participating in the "World's Longest Continuous Kiss" competition, which began Tuesday, were attempting to break the record set last year by a Thai couple who kept their mouths pressed together for 50 hours, 25 minutes and 1 second, CNN reported Wednesday.

The winning couple will receive a cash prize and a diamond ring in addition to the record recognition if they manage to beat last year's winning time.
