DULUTH, Minn., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A northern Minnesota effort to break the world record for most snow angels fell far short Saturday, an organizer said.

The 1,877 people who showed up at Malosky Stadium in Duluth didn't come close to the record of 8,922 set in 2007 in Bismarck, N.D., the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Still, Crystal Taylor, publicity chairwoman for "Make Your Mark: Angels for a Cause," said the event staged by the Duluth Rotary club and the Proctor High School DECA club raised about $14,000 to help provide clean drinking water for the Hamar, an indigenous people in Ethiopia.

"There was just such a great energy and vibe," she said. "It was a lot of fun, and we made our best attempt."
