Man busted for drunk dentistry

LINDENHURST, N.Y., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Police in New York state said they arrested a dentist whose assistant said he had been drinking on the job for months.

Robert Garelick, 57, was arrested at his Lindenhurst office Monday after his assistant, Kimberly Curtis, and dental hygienist, Dina Fara, allegedly caught him making mistakes on the job while drinking vodka from a sports bottle and alerted police, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

"I observed Dr. Garelick give [a] patient Novocain, an anesthetic for pain relief, in the wrong place in the patient's mouth. [Then], I observed Dr. Garelick looking for the cavities on the right side of the patient's mouth, but the cavities were on the left side," Curtis told police.

Police said Garelick initially told then he had drank a few beers with his lunch, but later changed his story to say he had not had any beer and had been drinking vodka all day.

Garelick was charged with misdemeanor reckless endangerment and released on his own recognizance.

Dolphins create paintings at Vegas resort

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A Las Vegas resort is offering visitors the chance to participate in the creation of artwork painted exclusively by dolphins.

The "Painting With the Dolphins" program at Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat in The Mirage allows guests to pick and canvas and the three paint colors the dolphins will use to create a masterpiece, the Las Vegas Sun reported Wednesday.

"Our primary goal at the Dolphin Habitat is to ensure the highest quality care, which includes high levels of physical and mental stimulation for the animals daily. This program creates another avenue to mentally challenge and engage our dolphins with their trainers while providing guests with an unforgettable experience," dolphin care curator Phillip Admire said.

The trainers said the dolphins use ecologically friendly brushes held in a buoy to allow the animals to easily and safely hold them with their mouths.

Former mayor wins bodybuilding contest

MIAMI, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A former Florida mayor emerged from nearly two years out of the spotlight to take first place at an "Over 60s" bodybuilding competition.

Former Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez took first prize at the National Physique Committee's South Florida "Over 60s" Master's bodybuilding competition at Miami's James L. Knight Center, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

Alvarez, who lost his position in a March 2011 recall election amid allegations of rewarding inappropriate raises to his inner circle and supporting a new $634 million ballpark for the Miami Marlins, now qualifies for the prestigious Junior National Master's competition, event promoter Sergio Pacheco said.

Museum attempts largest hot chocolate

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A Florida museum said it filled a giant cup with 880 gallons of hot chocolate in an attempt to set two world records.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa said a group of 300 children wrapped up the facility's Festival of Chocolate Monday by attempting to set records for the world's largest cup of hot chocolate and the world's largest practical science lesson, the Tampa Bay (Fla.) Times reported Wednesday.

"They are learning about potential energy, kinetic energy and they are creating candy cannons," said Vivian McIlrath, community education coordinator for MOSI.

She said the kids used the cannons to fill the hot chocolate with marshmallows.

The museum said the event was photographed and videotaped for submission to Guinness World Records.
