DETROIT, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A Detroit man said he caught a goldfish weighing more than 3 pounds while ice fishing for perch.
Mike Martin said he has been ice fishing on Lake St. Clair for 20 years, but Friday marked the first time he had ever reeled in a giant goldfish, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported Wednesday.
"We see them all the time but, to actually catch them is rare," Martin said. "Everybody wants to just dump them off their seawall and let them be free and this is what they turn into."
The goldfish weighs more than 3 pounds and measures nearly 15 inches long.
"I didn't know what to do with it, what do you do with a goldfish?" he said.
Martin said his father recommended he take the fish home. He said the state Department of Natural Resources has not yet gotten back to him about a state record.
"This will probably be the only one I ever catch so he's going to go on the wall," Martin said.
