EXETER, England, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Student leaders at a British university said they are investigating after footage appeared online of a couple having intercourse during a safe sex ball.

The University of Exeter's students' guild said it is investigating the leaking of closed circuit television footage of the couple having sex at the charity event, which took place just before Christmas, the London tabloid Mirror reported Wednesday.

"The students' guild recognizes that confidential CCTV footage has been filmed without our permission," the students union said in a statement. "The guild is making sure the affected parties will be supported during this difficult time. Measures were in place to provide high levels of security, but we are aware that irresponsible behavior has taken place and we are working hard to rectify the situation. A full investigation is under way in which action proportionate to the seriousness of the situation will be taken."

There was no word on whether the recorded couple were practicing safe sex.
