Facebook post leads to hit-and-run arrest

ASTORIA, Ore., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Police in Oregon said a drunken driving suspect was busted after posting about his escapades on Facebook.

Astoria police said they were contacted by Facebook friends of Jacob Cox-Brown, 18, after he posted on Facebook about driving under the influence of alcohol and hitting a vehicle, The Daily Astorian reported Tuesday.

"Drivin drunk ... classsic ;) but to whoever's vehicle i hit i am sorry. :P" the Facebook post read.

Police said officers responded at 1 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a hit-and-run crash involving a parked car being sideswiped, causing significant damage. Investigators said some damage was also done to the car parked in front of the vehicle.

Investigators said they checked out Cox-Brown's car and it had sustained damage consistent with the early Wednesday crash.

"Astoria police have an active social media presence," Astoria police said in a news release. "It was a private Facebook message to one of our officers that got this case moving, though. When you post ... on Facebook, you have to figure that it is not going to stay private long."

Cox-Brown was arrested on two counts of failing to perform the duties of a driver.
