TREIA, Italy, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Italy said they were able to rescue a dog that became trapped after crawling into a water pipe to escape New Year's Eve fireworks.

The hapless hound, named Zico, spent four days trapped in the pipe in the central Italian town of Treia and was finally freed Friday with the help of a farmer with an excavator, officials said.

Zico bolted into the pipe four days earlier when a fireworks show began, Italy's ANSA news agency said.
