NEW YORK, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A baby boy was born in New York City's Holland Tunnel, with Port Authority employees helping to deliver him, a Port Authority spokesman said.

Nassim Mohammad Elkarhat was prematurely born in his father's Cadillac on the Manhattan side of the New York-New Jersey tunnel early Wednesday as his parents, Adbel Elkarhat and Soukaina Nekhlaoui of Lodi, N.J., hurried to Brooklyn's Lutheran Medical Center. Two Port Authority employees aided in the delivery, the New York Daily News reported.

"The father was really frantic. You could tell he was a new father. He was screaming, 'Help me! Help me!,'" said senior tunnel and bridge officer George McCann, 52.

The baby, born six weeks prematurely, was blue when he arrived, but he recovered after McCann and colleague Jean Bernard administered oxygen though a makeshift tent fashioned from a woolen blanket, McCann said.

Arriving emergency crews cut the umbilical cord and took mother and son to New York Downtown Hospital, the newspaper said.
