Nova Scotia bans 2,966 license-plate words

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Authorities in Nova Scotia have banned 2,966 words, including sex and swear words, from use on license plates in the Canadian province.

The list was created by the staff at the Registry of Motor Vehicles of the Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Department, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

Banned terms include acronyms or abbreviations.

Many have a religious base or are politically motivated, such as ALLAH, GOD, HINDU, JESUS, WEH8NDP and WEH8PCS.

Paul Arsenault, the registrar of motor vehicles at Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, said there is a step-by-step process for getting an approved personal license plate.

First, a clerk checks the list of banned words, Arsenault said.

"If that was on the list of names that we don't allow, that would be an immediate rejection of the application."

Most of the list was comprised from plates banned in other provinces, but some came from other sources, Arsenault said.

"There are some websites that we would use. Urban Dictionary comes to mind as one that they would check for modern slang."
