Scottish clan chief in row over road

NAIRN, Scotland, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Local officials have threatened a clan chief with legal action for barring the public from a parking lot near a seaside resort on the east coast of Scotland.

Alexander Brodie of Brodie, the 27th chief of Brodie, says the parking lot at Kingsteps, Lochloy, in Nairn was mainly being used by young people playing loud music, The Scotsman reported. He also said he wanted to block vehicle access to hunters going after wildfowl, a practice he described as "morally wrong," although it is not illegal.

Brodie put up a gate after several meetings with the local council failed to reach a compromise. The council, which says the road is a public right of way, has said it may take him to court.

The lot can still be reached on foot. But dog walkers and beachgoers who also used the lot will not be able to drive in.

Nairn on the east coast of Scotland near Inverness is an old fishing town that has evolved into a beach resort and cultural center.
