BELOIT, Wis., Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Police in Beloit, Wis., said they seized a malnourished calf discovered in the basement of a home during a domestic-disturbance call.

Officers said they responded to a call from a home Sunday after a woman dialed 911 to report she had been assaulted by her husband, WISC-TV, Madison, Wis., reported Wednesday.

"(Police) discovered the domestic disturbance originated over the fact that the children were not feeding the cow that was being kept in the basement of the house," said Capt. Vince Sciame of the Beloit Police Department. "The husband was upset that the cow hadn't been fed properly by the children, or children were supposed to feed the calf and they hadn't done so; he got upset about that and assaulted his wife."

Police said the calf, estimated to be several weeks old, was malnourished.

City officials deemed the house uninhabitable and the family is facing building code violations and a citation for keeping livestock in the city.

The calf was treated at the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Hospital and adopted by a shelter.
