Advertisement George Holscher, 48, of Chesapeake, was paralyzed in a car crash when he was 25. "When my doctor told me I'd never walk again, that was the worst 5 minutes of my life. And that's about as long as I let it last," Holscher said. Since his accident, Holscher said he started playing a number of sports -- including wheelchair basketball, tennis and billiards -- The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported. He stuck with bowling, and when he rolled his perfect game Nov. 26, he became the second person ever to bowl 300 from a wheelchair. "I know I said I can't feel my knees, but let me tell you, they were weak," Holscher said of how he felt after bowling a 300. Advertisement "When you're on a streak like that, the whole house gets quiet," Holscher said. "Everyone else stops bowling. It gets tense." Newborn elephant at zoo doing well PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- An Asian elephant born Friday at the Oregon Zoo is doing well, zoo officials say. The female elephant was born to mother Rose-Tu, The (Portland) Oregonian reported. "She's a pretty active little girl. She's getting her sea legs underneath her," said Chris Pfefferkorn, zoo deputy director. Veterinarians determined during a checkup Saturday the baby elephant, who has not been named yet, looked healthy and her lungs and heart sounded good, Pfefferkorn said. "The staff is really happy with how everything has gone so far," Pfefferkorn said. "It's been better than any of us expected. You can see the look of relief on their faces." Zoo officials have not yet figured out when the newborn and her mother will be on public display, Pfefferkorn said. Teen petitions Hasbro over Easy-Bake Oven GARFIELD, N.J., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A New Jersey teen started a petition asking toy company Hasbro Inc. to make its Easy-Bake Oven more boy-friendly after her brother asked for one for Christmas. Advertisement McKenna Pope, 13, of Garfield, started a Change.org petition over her 4-year-old brother's love of cooking, the New York Daily News reported. "My little brother has always loved cooking. Being in the kitchen is his favorite out-of-school activity, and he yearns for the opportunity to cook on his own" Pope said. However, the toy has long been marketed to girls and made in gender specific colors like pink and purple. Pope's petition calls on Hasbro to drop its all-girl advertising so boys like her brother feel comfortable asking for the toy. "I want my brother to know that it's not 'wrong' for him to want to be a chef, that it's okay to go against what society believes to be appropriate," Pope said. Man sits 3 weeks on winning lottery ticket WAYNESVILLE, N.C., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A Waynesville, N.C., man who won a Carolina Cash 5 lottery jackpot worth $118,180 says he didn't realize for almost three weeks he had won. Wade Haskett did not check his ticket from the Nov. 6 Cash 5 drawing until Nov. 25, when he discovered he won, The Times-New, Henderson, N.C., reported. Haskett said he plays Carolina Cash 5, as well as Powerball and Mega Millions, but he never expected to win. Advertisement "I didn't really expect to win anything," said Haskett. "I figured it was going to be like it usually was, someone else winning it." Haskett said he and his wife plan to use their winnings to make home improvements, including a new roof and new hardwood floors, to help their adult children, and possibly to take a trip to St. Petersburg, Fla. to visit a son. "I know it is not a big amount, but it is more than I had," Haskett said. "I am just thankful I won it. It came at a good time." Haskett and a second winner, Larry Clegg of Biscoe, split a $236,360 jackpot. After taxes were withheld, they each received received $80,364.
