FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A Florida doctor said he delivered his son in the parking lot of a hospital when he and his wife were unable to get to the emergency room on time.

Dr. Timothy Hawkes, an orthopedic resident at Broward Health Medical Center, said he began the delivery with one hand while speeding to the hospital with his wife, Katelin, in the passenger seat of his Scion XB, and the baby was born in the facility's parking lot at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Thursday.

"I am used to pressure situations. We see a lot of tense situations here at a hospital like this one, but I am an orthopedic resident," Hawkes said. "I deal mostly with bones and arthritis. I don't deliver babies."

Hawkes said his two young children, Camden, 5, and Elle, 3, were in the back seat when their brother, William Carter Hawkes, was born.

The parents said the "Carter" part of the infant's name is a reference to his being born in a car.
