LONDON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A British author says research he conducted for his latest book found that of the world's nearly 200 countries, only 22 have never been invaded by Britain.

Stuart Laycock said he traveled the world for his book, "All the Countries We've Ever Invaded: And the Few We Never Got Round To," to determine which countries had ever been invaded by the British, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

Laycock said the countries never attacked by Britain, which once lorded over so much of the world it was often described as the empire on which the sun never set, include both far-off lands such as Guatemala and Tajikistan, and some closer, including Luxembourg.

The author said his total also included raids by state-sanctioned British pirates and privateers.

"I was absolutely staggered when I reached the total. I like to think I have a relatively good general knowledge. But there are places where it hadn't occurred to me that these things had ever happened. It shocked me," Laycock said. "Other countries could write similar books -- but they would be much shorter. I don't think anyone could match this, although the Americans had a later start and have been working hard on it in the 20th century."
