Preschool teacher crams 19 kids into car

PRETORIA, South Africa, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Police in South Africa said they pulled over a preschool teacher who was found to have crammed 19 kids into her car for a trip to a shopping center.

Pretoria police said Melanie Minnie, a faculty member at Rietfontein Nursery School, was pulled over in her Renault Clio and officers found she was driving 19 children back to the school from a local shopping center, The Mirror, London, reported Monday.

Police said three children were in the front seat, 10 were in the backseat and six were found riding in the boot of the car. It was unclear whether any of the children were wearing seatbelts.

The woman told officers she had already ferried a carload of 10 children back to the school.

"It was the first time we went on an outing, and the last. I'll never do it again," Minnie told police.

Minnie was fined about $160 for overloading her car.

First lady casts absentee ballot

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- First lady Michelle Obama told her husband -- and anyone traveling in the Twitter-verse -- that she voted in the U.S. presidential election.

"Hey, @BarackObama, I just dropped my absentee ballot in the mail -- I couldn't wait for Election Day! Love you! --mo," the post Monday on the first lady's Twitter page read.

Not to be outdone, Obama replied he was "following @MichelleObama's example and voting early, on October 25."

Both Twitter posts urged visitors interested in early voting to find out whether their states have it.

Parent: Toy appears to be saying 'rape me'

SANDY, Utah, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A Utah mother said she wants the Catch-Me-Kitty toy pulled from stores because it sounds like it is saying "rape me."

Kayla McCune of Sandy said she bought the toy for her young daughter about two months ago and soon found the toy's recorded phrase, which is supposed to be "chase me, race me, you'll have fun," sounded more like "chase me, rape me," KSTU-TV, Salt Lake City, reported Monday.

"I opened it and let my daughter play with it and about two times after we put it on, I noticed it was saying, 'Chase me, rape me,'" she said. "I had to turn it off and back on a couple times for it to register, that a kid toy was actually saying that."

KSTU-TV said it found many comments online from parents with similar problems with the Catch-Me-Kitty, which is manufactured by VTech.

"I would like this to be pulled off the shelves so little kids aren't singing this song thinking it's funny," she said.

McCune said the company refused to listen to her complaints.

KSTU-TV said it has emailed VTech for a comment, but has yet to receive a reply.

Author recommends tuna swim for tourism

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A U.S. author who had the chance to swim with tuna while visiting Canada's Prince Edward Island said similar swims could be a major tourist draw.

Carl Safina, a teacher at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y., and author of "Song for the Blue Ocean" and other books about how the ocean is changing over time, said she swam with a group of tuna off North Lake while visiting Prince Edward Island, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

Safina said tuna swimming could become a major tourist draw for Prince Edward Island.

"I think it would really change people's relationship with these fish in a way that is similar to what people do on coral reefs. There are a lot of fish on coral reefs. But the big money is in letting people dive on reefs and letting them just see how the fish really are," Safina said. "There's an opportunity in P.E.I., and maybe even in parts of New Brunswick, to actually get in the water with these really, really amazing giant fish."

However, Ross Keus, who took Safina out on his boat, said he does not expect tuna swimming to take off due to safety concerns and the high price of liability insurance.

"Divers could get caught in nets, and if there happens to be a person fighting a tuna on a hook and line, the line is zipping tight and it could cut through you quite easily," he said.
