DELAND, Fla., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Chubby Checker, singer of "The Twist," led a Florida group of more than 4,000 participants in the song's signature dance to break the world record.

Organizers of the dance Thursday in DeLand, part of the Florida Hospital DeLand's Downtown DeLand 50th Birthday Bash, said more than 4,000 people grooved to the 71-year-old singer's hit song to break the Largest Twist Dance world record, which was previously set at 1,706 by a North Carolina group in 2011, the Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday.

The dance went on for the five minutes required to qualify as a Guinness World Record, organizers said.

Guinness said it must review the evidence of the record and verify an official headcount before the record can be certified.
