SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A California fisherman and his boat skipper said they are awaiting confirmation that their 427-pound yellowfin tuna is a world record.

Greg DiStefano of San Clemente, skipper of the sportfishing boat El Suertudo, said fisherman Guy Yocom of Dana Point reeled in the massive tuna while fishing in Mexican waters Sept. 18, The Orange County Register reported Tuesday.

He said the current International Game Fishing Association record for a yellowfin tuna catch is 405 pounds, and the fish Yocom landed could earn him a $1 million prize from hook manufacturer Mustad if it is confirmed as a record.

"We probably got at least 200 pounds of filets out of it, probably a little more," DiStefano said of the fish. "We brought a lot of it home and gave a lot of it away down there. We smoked some."
